Terma and Lockheed Martin join forces on Integrated Air and Missile Defense System During the 6th International Conference on Missile Defense, "Challenges in Europe", Terma’s paper on how cooperation and bundling of capabilities in modern software architecture could provide a reasonable European path to Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) was selected for presentation. The paper was presented by Head of Terma’s Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) initiative Jannik Hjulgaard. He used the Terma and Lockheed Martin jointly developed BMD-FlexTM Command and Control Software product as an example of the evolution from Ground Based Air Defense to IAMD. The presentation was very well received by the audience and several participants took the opportunity afterwards to show significant interest in both the product bundle and the technology applied to the system. The continued spiral development of the BMD-FlexTM started back in 2005 when Terma and Lockheed Martin partnered on the development of an integrated air and missile defense capability. The solution consists of a product bundle which integrates key components from Lockheed Martin MS2's Command and Control (C2) product line with Terma’s T-Core architecture to produce a software-based capability that meets NATO and international air and missile defense command and control requirements. Terma provides the fielded T-Core framework together with the development of BMD enhanced components for T-Core and also the integration work associated with incorporating Lockheed Martin discrete software components into the solution framework. The Lockheed Martin contribution consists of System-of-Systems engineering expertise critical for an IAMD system, especially regarding time constraints for efficiency, modular C2 Components, and their vast Aegis BMD testing and evaluation expertise. The conference, entitled “Challenges in Europe”, was the 6th missile defense conference arranged by Association Aéronautique Astronautique de France - 3AF. This year, it was held in Lisbon, Portugal from 9 to 12 February. The 3AF conference is one of two big international missile defense conference venues held frequently, where international decision makers from governments and governmental organizations such as NATO participate together with industry, to discuss the status and way ahead for missile defense on both a political and technical level.
